في تَصاريفِ الدُّنيا اِعْتِبارٌ.
در دگرگونی‌های دنیا عبرت است.
In the vicissitudes of this world there are lessons to be learnt.
فِي الدُّنيا عَمَلٌ، ولا حِسابٌ.
در دنیا عمل است و حساب نیست.
In this world there is action without reckoning.
فِي الدُّنْيا رَغْبَةُ الأشْقياءِ.
در دنیا رغبتِ بدبختان است.
This world is what the wretched desire.
قَدْ يَتَفاصَلُ المُتَواصِلانِ (المُتَفاصِلان)، ويَشَتُّ جَمْعُ الأليفَيْنِ.
بسا که دو پیوندکننده [یا دو جداشده] از هم جدا شوند و گردآمدِ دو دمساز پراکنده شود.
The two that are attached to each other may get detached and the two groups that are united may get separated.
قَدْ أمَرَّ مِنَ الدُّنيا ما كانَ حُلْواً، وكَدَرَ مِنْها ما كانَ صَفْواً.
از دنیا آنچه شیرین بود تلخ شد و آنچه صاف بود تیره گشت.
Indeed, that which was sweet of this world has become bitter, and that which was clean of it has become dirty.
قَدْ تَزَيَّنَتِ الدُّنيا بِغُرُورِها، وغَرَّتْ بِزينَتِها.
دنیا به فریبش آراسته شد و با زیورش فریفت.
Indeed this world has embellished itself with its deception and it deceives [its inhabitants] with its embellishments.
قَليلُ الدُّنيا يَذْهَبُ بِكَثيرِ الآخِرَةِ.
اندکِ دنیا بسیارِ آخرت را ببرد.
Little of this world takes away a lot of the Hereafter.
قَليلُ الدُّنيا لا يَدُومُ بَقائُهُ، وكَثيرُها لا يُؤْمَنُ بَلاؤُهُ.
اندکِ دنیا بقایش پایدار نماند و بسیارش بلایش ایمن نیست.
The little of this world does not last and its abundance is not safe from calamities.
قِوامُ الدُّنْيا بِأرْبَع: عالِمٌ يَعْمَلُ بِعِلْمِهِ، وجاهِلٌ لايَسْتَنْكِفُ أنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ، وغَنِيٌّ يَجُودُ بِمالِهِ عَلَى الفُقَراءِ، وفَقيرٌ لايَبيعُ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنياهُ فَإذا لَمْ يَعمَلِ العالِمُ بِعِلْمِهِ، اِسْتَنْكَفَ الجاهِلُ أنْ يَتَعَلَّمَ، وإذا بَخِلَ الغَنِيُّ بِمالِهِ باعَ الفَقيرُ آخِرَتَهُ بِدنياهُ.
قوامِ دنیا به چهار است: عالمی که به دانشش عمل کند و نادانی که از آموختن سر باز نزند و توانگری که مالت را به فقیران ببخشد و تهیدستی که آخرتش را به دنیایش نفروشد. پس اگر عالم به دانشش عمل نکند، نادان از آموختن سر باز زند و اگر توانگر به مالت بخل ورزد، تهیدست آخرتش را به دنیایش فروشد.
The mainstay of this world is by four [groups]: A scholar who acts on his knowledge, an ignorant person who is not too proud to learn, a wealthy person who is generous with his wealth to the needy and a poor person who does not sell his Hereafter for his worldly life. So when the scholar does not act on his knowledge, the ignorant one refuses to learn; and when the wealthy is miserly with his wealth, the poor one sells his Hereafter for his world.
كُلُّ جَمْع إلى شَتات.
هر گردآمدی به پراکندگی است.
Every gathering is [headed] towards dispersion.
كُلُّ أرْباحِ الدُّنيا خُسْرانٌ.
همهٔ سودهای دنیا زیان است.
Every profit of this world is a loss.
كُلُّ ماض فَكَأنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ.
هر گذشته‌ای چنان است که گویی نبوده است.
Everything that passes [away] is as if it never was.
كُلُّ يَسارِ الدُّنيا إعْسارٌ.
همهٔ توانگریِ دنیا تهیدستی است.
Every ease of this world is difficulty.
كُلُّ مُؤَنِ الدُّنيا خَفيفَةٌ علَى القانِعِ والعَفيفِ.
همهٔ بارهای دنیا بر قانع و پاکدامن آسان است.
Every provision of this world is trivial for the contented and the chaste.
كُلُّ شَيء مِنَ الدُّنيا سَماعُهُ أعْظَمُ مِنْ عِيانِهِ.
هر چیزی از دنیا شنیدنش بزرگ‌تر است از دیدنش.
Everything in this world [is such that it] seems greater when heard than when seen.
كُلُّ أحوالِ الدُّنيا زَلْزالٌ، ومِلْكُها سَلَبٌ وانْتِقالٌ.
همهٔ حال‌های دنیا زلزله است و ملکش غارت و انتقال.
All the circumstances of this world change abruptly and its ownership is taken away and transferred [to others].
كُلُّ مُدَّة مِنَ الدُّنيا إلَى انْتِهاء، وَكُلُّ حَيّ فيها إلى مَمات وَفَناء.
هر مدتی از دنیا به پایان است و هر زنده‌ای در آن به مرگ و فناست.
Every moment of this world is [taking it] towards the end and every living thing in it is [moving] towards its death and annihilation.
كَمْ مِنْ واثِق بِالدُّنيا قَدْفَجَعَتْهُ.
چه بسیارند آن که به دنیا اعتماد کرد و داغدارش ساخت!
How many a person who relied upon this world has been made to suffer by it!
كَمْ مِنْ ذي طُمَأنِينَة إلَى الدُّنيا قَدْ صَرَعَتْهُ.
چه بسیارند آن که به دنیا آرام گرفت و به خاکش افکند!
How many a person who had confidence in this world has been struck down by it!
