ما دُنياكَ الَّتي تَحَبَّبَتْ إلَيكَ بِخَير مِنَ الآخِرَةِ الَّتي قَبََّحَها سُوءُ النَّطرِ عِنْدَكَ.
دنیای تو که به تو دوست‌داشتنی گشته، از آخرتی که بدنگریِ تو زشتش کرده بهتر نیست.
This world of yours which endears itself to you is not better than the Hereafter which is made to appear ugly by your negative perception [of it].
ما قدَّمْتَ مِنْ دُنياكَ فَلِنَفْسِكَ، وَما أخَّرْتَ مِنْها فَلِلْعَدُوِّ.
آنچه از دنیایت پیش فرستی، خود راست و آنچه به تأخیر اندازی، دشمن راست.
That which you send forth from this world is for your own benefit and that which you leave behind from it is for your enemy.
مازادَ فِي الدُّنيا نَقَصَ فِي الآخِرَةِ.
آنچه در دنیا فزون شود، در آخرت کم شود.
That which [one] increases in this world, [he] diminishes in the Hereafter.
مانَقَصَ فِي الدُّنيا زادَ فِي الآخِرَةِ.
آنچه در دنیا کم شود، در آخرت فزون شود.
That which [one] diminishes in this world, [he] increases in the Hereafter.
مانِلْتَ مِنْ دُنياكَ فَلا تُكْثِرْ بِهِ فَرَحاً، وما فاتَكَ مِنْها فلا تَأسَ عَلَيْهِ حُزْناً.
آنچه از دنیایت به دست آوری، بدان بسیار شاد مشو و آنچه از تو فوت شود، بر آن اندوهگین مباش.
Do not be overjoyed by that which you obtain in this world and do not despair with sadness for that which eludes you from it.
ماخَيْرُ دار تُنْقَضُ نَقْضَ البِناءِ، وعُمْر يَفْنى فَناءَ الزَّادِ.
چه خیر در خانه‌ای است که چون ساختمان ویران شود و عمری که چون توشه فانی شود؟
What is good in a house that falls down like demolished construction and in a lifetime that expires as [its] provisions get exhausted?
ما بالُكُمْ تَفْرَحُونَ بِاليَسيرِ مِنَ الدُّنيا تُدْرِكُونَهُ، ولايَحْزنُكُمُ الكَثيرُ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ تُحْرَمُونَهُ.
شما را چه شده که به اندکی از دنیا که درک کنید شادمانید و بسیارِ آخرتی که از آن محرومید غمگینتان نکند؟
What is the matter with you? You are delighted with the little of this world that you obtain while you are not saddened by the abundance of the Hereafter that you are deprived of?!
ما الدُّنيا غَرَّتْكَ، وَلكِنْ بِهَا اغْتَرَرْتَ.
دنیا فریبت نداد، بلکه بدان فریفته شدی.
This world has not deceived you, rather through it you have been deceived.
مَا العاجِلَةُ خَدَعَتْكَ، ولكِنْ بِهَا انْخَدَعْتَ.
شتابنده فریبت نداد، بلکه بدان فریفته شدی.
The transient world has not beguiled you, rather through it you have been beguiled.
مالَكَ وما إنْ أدْرَكْتَهُ شَغَلَكَ بِصَلاحِهِ عَنِ الاستِمتاعِ بِهِ، وإنْ تَمَتَّعْتَ بِهِ نَغَّصَهُ عَلَيكَ ظَفَرُ المَوتِ بِكَ.
تو را با آنچه اگر به دستش آوری، اصلاحش تو را از تمتع به آن باز دارد و اگر از آن تمتع بری، چیرگیِ مرگ بر تو ناگوارش کند چه کار است؟
What is [the matter] with you that which, if you acquire it [the wealth of this world], its improvement [and seeking something better than it] preoccupies you from enjoying it, and if you enjoy it, it spoils it [the enjoyment] for you with the victory of death over you.
مَا المَغْرُورُ الَّذي ظَفِرَ مِنَ الدُّنيا بِأدْنى سُهْمَتِهِ كَالآخَرِ الَّذي ظَفِرَ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ بِأعْلى هِمَّتِهِ.
فریب‌خورده‌ای که از دنیا به کمترینِ بهره‌اش دست یافته چون آن دیگری نیست که از آخرت به والاترینِ همتش دست یافته است.
The deceived person who gains success in this world through its smallest portion is not like the other person who is gains success in the Hereafter by exerting his greatest effort.[^8]
ما أقْرَبَ الدُّنيا مِنَ الذَّهابِ، والشَّيْبَ مِنَ الشَّبابِ، والشَّكَّ مِنَ الاِرتيابِ.
چه نزدیک است دنیا به رفتن و پیری به جوانی و شک به تردید!
How close this world is to departure, old age is to youth, and doubt is to uncertainty!
مَرارَةُ الدُّنيا حَلاوَةُ الآخِرَةِ.
تلخیِ دنیا شیرینیِ آخرت است.
The bitterness of this world is the sweetness of the Hereafter.
مُصاحِبُ الدُّنيا هَدَفُ النَّوائبِ والغِيَرِ.
همدمِ دنیا هدفِ حوادث و دگرگونی‌هاست.
One who accompanies this world is a target of calamities and mishaps.
مَثَلُ الدُّنيا كَظِلِّكَ، إنْ وَقَفْتَ وَقَفَ، وإنْ طَلَبْتَهُ بَعُدَ.
مَثَلِ دنیا چون سایهٔ توست: اگر بایستی، بایستد و اگر بجویش، دور شود.
The similitude of this world is like your shadow, if you stop it stops and if you seek it, it moves further away.
مَثَلُ الدُّنيا كَمَثلِ الحَيَّةِ، لَيِّـنٌ مَسُّها، والسَّـمُّ القاتِلُ في جَوفِها، يَهْوي إلَيْهَا الغِرُّ الجاهِلُ، ويَحْذَرُهَا اللَّبيبُ العاقلُ.
مَثَلِ دنیا چونان مار است که لمسش نرم و زهرِ کشنده در شکمش است؛ نادانِ غافل به سویش رود و خردمندِ دانا از آن پرهیز کند.
The similitude of this world is like the snake, its feel is soft but it has deadly venom in its fangs. The inexperienced and ignorant one reaches towards it while the wise and intelligent one is cautious of it.
مَتاعُ الدُّنيا حُطامٌ مُوبِيٌ، فَتَجَنَّبُوا مَرْعاةً، قُلْعَتُها أحْظى مِنْ طُمَأنِينَتِها، وبُلْغَتُها أزْكى مِنْ ثَرْوَتِها.
متاعِ دنیا شکسته‌ریزِ هلاک‌کننده است؛ پس از چراگاهی بپرهیزید که کندن از آن بهتر از آرامش به آن و توشه‌اش پاکیزه‌تر از ثروتش است.
The wares of this world are [like] broken orts that cause epidemics, therefore keep off the grazing land which is more beneficial to migrate from than to peacefully stay in, and that of it which suffices for subsistence in it is purer [for the soul] than its riches.
هَلَكَ مَنِ اسْتَنامَ إلَى الدُّنيا، وأمْهَرَها دينَهُ فَهُوَ حَيْثُما مالَتْ مالَ إلَيْها،قَدِ اتَّخَذَها هَمَّهُ ومَعْبُودُهُ.
هلاک شد آن که به دنیا آرام گرفت و دینش را مهرِ آن کرد؛ پس هر جا مایل شود به آن مایل شود و آن را همّ و معبودِ خود گرفته است.
Destroyed is one who finds reassurance in this world and makes his religion its dower, so he turns towards it wherever it turns, having taken it to be his [only] concern and his deity.
هَوِّنْ عَلَيْكَ فَإنَّ الأمْرَ قَريبٌ، والاِصْطِحابَ قَليلٌ، وَالمُقامَ يَسيرٌ.
بر خود آسان گیر؛ چرا که کار نزدیک و همراهی اندک و اقامت کوتاه است.
Take it easy, for indeed the matter is near, the companionship is short and the sojourn is brief.
