اَلْحَياءُ يَمْنَعُ الرِّزْقَ.
حیا روزی را باز دارد.
Shame prevents livelihood.[^1]
اَلْحَياءُ مِفْتاحُ (كُلِّ) الْخَيْـرِ.
حیا کلیدِ همهٔ خیر است.
Modesty is the key to (every) good.
اَلْحَياءُ مَقْرُونٌ بِالْحِرْمانِ.
حیا با محرومیت جفت است.
Shame is accompanied by deprivation.
اَلْحَياءُ غَضُّ الطَّرْفِ.
حیا فروهشتنِ نگاه است.
Modesty is the lowering of one’s gaze.
اَلْحَياءُ تَمامُ الْكَرَمِ.
حیا تمامیتِ کرامت است.
Modesty is the perfection of honour.
اَلْحَياءُ قَرِينُ الْعَفافِ.
حیا همدمِ پاکدامنی است.
Modesty is the partner of chastity.
اَلْحَياءُ خُلْقٌ جَمِيلٌ.
حیا خلقی زیباست.
Modesty is a beautiful quality.
اَلْحَياءُ خُلْقٌ مَرْضِيٌّ.
حیا خلقی پسندیده است.
Modesty is a pleasing characteristic.
اَلْحَياءُ تَمامُ الكَرَمِ، وأحْسَنُ الشِّيَمِ.
حیا تمامیتِ کرامت و نیکوترینِ خوی‌هاست.
Modesty is the perfection of honour and the best of traits.
اَلْحَياءُ يَصُدُّ عَنْ فِعْلِ القَبيحِ.
حیا از کردارِ زشت باز دارد.
Modesty prevents one from ugly actions.
اَلْحَياءُ مِنَ اللّهِ يَمْحُو كَثيراً مِنَ الخَطايا.
حیا از خدا بسیاری از خطاها را محو کند.
Being ashamed in front of Allah effaces many of the sins [that one has committed].
تَسَرْبَلِ الْحَياءَ، وادَّرَِعِ الْوَفاءَ، واحْفَظِ الإخاءَ، وأقْلِلْ مُحادَثَةَ النِّساءِ يَكْمَلْ لَكَ السَّناءُ.
حیا را پیراهن کن و وفا را زره و برادری را نگاه دار و سخن با زنان را کم کن تا بلندیِ شأن برایت کامل شود.
Dress yourself with modesty, wear the armour of loyalty, safeguard brotherhood and reduce your conversations with women, [if you do all this] your eminence will become complete.
ثَمَرةُ الْحَياءِ العِفَّةُ.
میوهٔ حیا پاکدامنی است.
The fruit of modesty is chastity.
ثَلاثٌ لا يُسْتَحْيى مِنْهُنَّ: خِدْمَةُ الرَّجُلِ ضَيْفَهُ، وقِيامُهُ عَنْ مَجْلِسِهِ لأبيهِ ومُعَلِّمِهِ، وطَلَبُ الْحَقِّ وإنْ قَلَّ.
سه چیز است که از آن شرم نکنند: خدمتِ مرد به مهمانش و برخاستنش از مجلسش برای پدر و آموزگارش و طلبِ حق هرچند اندک باشد.
Three things that are not to be ashamed of [are]: for a person to serve his guest, and for him to stand up from his place for his father or his teacher, and [for him] to seek the right even if it is little.
حَياءُ الرَّجُلِ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ ثَمَرَةُ الإيمانِ.
حیای مرد از خودش میوهٔ ایمان است.
The shame of person feels from himself is the fruit of [his] faith.
سَبَبُ العِفَّةِ اَلْحَياءُ.
سببِ پاکدامنی حیاست.
The source of chastity is modesty.
عَلَيْكَ بِالْحَياءِ فَإنَّهُ عُنْوانُ النُّبْلِ.
بر تو باد حیا؛ چرا که نشانهٔ بزرگواری است.
Espouse modesty, for it is the symbol of nobility.
غايَةُ الْحَياءِ أنْ يَسْتَحْيِيَ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ.
غایتِ حیا آن است که مرد از خودش شرم کند.
The pinnacle of modesty is for a man to feel ashamed of himself.
قُرِنَ الْحَياءُ بِالْحِرْمانِ.
حیا با محرومیت جفت شده است.
Shame has been paired with deprivation.
