مَنْ كَثُرَتْ مَخافَتُهُ قَلَّتْ آفَتُهُ.

مَنْ خافَ اللّهَ لَمْ يَشْفِ غَيْظَهُ.
هر که از خدا بترسد، غیظش را شفا ندهد.
One who fears Allah does not quench his anger [by taking revenge].
مَنْ خافَ رَبَّهُ كَفَّ عَنْ ظُلْمِهِ.
هر که از پروردگارش بترسد، از ستمش باز ایستد.
One who fears his Lord refrains from being unjust [to anyone].
مَنْ قَلَّتْ مَخافَتُهُ كَثُرَتْ آفَتُهُ.
هر که ترسش کم شود، آفت‌هایش فزون شود.
One whose fear [of Allah] reduces, his affliction increases.
مَنْ لَمْ يَصْدُق مِنَ اللّهِ خَوْفُهُ لَمْ يَنَلْ مِنْهُ الأمانُ.
هر که ترسش از خدا راست نباشد، امان از او نیابد.
One who does not truly fear Allah will not gain His security.
مَنْ خافَ اللّهَ آمَنَهُ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْء.
هر که از خدا بترسد، خدای سبحان او را از هر چیزی ایمنی دهد.
One who fears Allah is protected by Allah, the Glorified, from everything.
نِعْمَ العِبادَةُ الخَشْيَةُ.
چه نیکو عبادتی است ترس!
The best form of worship is fear [and awe] of Allah.
نِعْمَ الحاجِزُ عَنِ المعاصي الخَوْفُ.
چه نیکو بازدارنده‌ای از نافرمانی‌هاست ترس!
The best barrier from sins is fear [of Allah].
نِعْمَ مَطِيَّةُ الأمْنِ الخَوْفُ.
چه نیکو مرکبِ ایمنی‌ای است ترس!
The best means of [arriving at] security is fear [of Allah].
لايَخَفْ خائِفٌ إلاّ ذَنْبَهُ.
ترسان را نرسد که جز از گناهش بترسد.
Let no fearful one fear anything other than his sins.
لا تَخَفْ إلاّ ذَنْبَكَ.
جز از گناهت مترس.
Do not fear anything other than your sins.
لاعِلمَ كالخَشْيَةِ.
هیچ دانشی چون ترس نیست.
There is no knowledge like the fear [and awe] of Allah.
اَلخَشْيَةُ شيمَةُ السُّعَداءِ.
ترس خویِ نیکبختان است.
Fear [and awe] of Allah is the attribute of the felicitous.
مَنْ خافَ الوَعيدَ قَرَّبَ على نَفْسِهِ البَعيدَ.
هر که از وعید بترسد، دور را بر خود نزدیک کند.
One who fears the threat of Allah [to the evildoers] brings close to himself that which is far.
الخَوْفُ اِسْتِظْهارٌ.
ترس پشت‌گرمی است.
Fear [of Allah] is a backing.
مَنْ خافَ العِقابَ اِنْصَرَفَ عَنِ السَّيـِّئاتِ. [^1]: Or in another reading: Fear [Allah] and you will be cautious [not to disobey Him].
هر که از کیفر بترسد، از بدی‌ها بازگردد.
One who fears [divine] punishment desists from evil actions.
إذا خِفْتَ المَخْلُوقَ فَرَرْتَ مِنْهُ.
چون از آفریده‌ای بترسی، از او گریزی.
Whenever you fear the created [as opposed to the Creator], you flee from him.
إذا هِبْتَ أمْراً فَقَعْ فيهِ، فإنَّ شِدَّةَ تَوَقّيهِ أشَدُّ مِنَ الوُقُوعِ فيهِ.
چون از کاری بیمناک شوی، در آن افت؛ چرا که شدتِ پرهیز از آن سخت‌تر است از افتادن در آن.
When you are frightened of something then jump into it, for indeed the difficulty of safeguarding yourself from it is greater than [that of] entering into it.
وقال ـ عليه السّلام ـ في حَقِّ مَنْ ذَمَّهُ: جَعَلَ خَوْفَهُ مِنَ العِبادِ نَقْداً، ومِنْ خالِقِهِمْ (خالِقهِ) ضَماناً (ضِماراً) وَوَعْداً.
دربارهٔ کسی که نکوهشش کرد فرمود: ترسش از بندگان را نقد گرفت و از آفریدگارشان [یا آفریدگارِ خود] را وعده و ضمانتی دور.
He (‘a) said about the one whom he censured: …he has made his fear of men ready currency while his fear of the Creator a mere guarantee or promise [to be carried out later].
مَنْ خافَ النَّاسَ أخافَهُ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْء.
هر که از مردم بترسد، خدای سبحان او را از هر چیزی بترساند.
One who fears the people, Allah, the Glorified, makes him afraid of everything.
