الدُّنيا أمَدٌ، اَلآخِرَةٌ أبَدٌ.
دنیا مدتی است و آخرت ابدی.
This world is limited [in duration], the Hereafter is eternal.
إذا كانَ البَقاءُ لايُوجَدُ فَالنَّعيمُ زائِلٌ.
چون بقا یافت نشود، نعمت زایل است.
When lastingness is not found, then bounties are short-lived.
ما يُعطَي البَقاءُ مَنْ أحَبَّهُ.
بقا به آن که دوستش دارد داده نشود.
Perpetuity is not granted to [any] one who loves [and wishes for] it.
اَلرُّكُونُ إلَى الدُّنْيا مَعَ مايُعايَنُ مِنْ سُوءِ تَقَلُّبِها جَهْلٌ.
تکیه به دنیا با آنچه از بدیِ دگرگونی‌اش دیده شود، نادانی است.
Inclination towards this world despite what is seen of its fickleness is [a sign of] ignorance.
كُلُّ فان يَسيرٌ.
هر فانی اندک است.
Every perishing thing is insignificant.
لاتَرْفَعْ مَنْ رَفَعَتْهُ الدُّنيا.
آن که دنیا برکشیدش بر مکش.
Do not elevate the one who has been elevated by this world.
يا أهلَ الغُرورِ ما ألْهَجَكُمْ بِدار، خَيْرُها زَهيدٌ، وشَـرُّها عَتيدٌ، وَنَعيمُها مَسْلُوبٌ، ومُسالِمُها مَحْرُوبٌ، ومالِكُها مَمْلُوكٌ، وَتُراثُها مَتْرُوكٌ.
ای اهلِ فریب! شما را با خانه‌ای که خیرش اندک و شرّش آماده و نعمتش دزدیده و مسالمت‌جویش جنگ‌زده و مالکش بنده و میراثش واگذاشته است، چه شوری است؟
people of delusion [who have been deluded by this world], what has made you attached to an abode the goodness of which is trifling, the evil of which is ready at hand, the bounties of which are snatched away, the peaceful of which are fought against, the owners of which are slaves and the heritage of which is abandoned.
يا دُنيا يا دُنيا إلَيكِ عَنّي، أبي تَعَرَّضْتِ أمْ إلَيَّ تَشَوَّقْتِ، لاحانَ حينُكِ، غُرّي غَيري لاحاجَةَ لي فيكِ، قَدْ طَلَّقْتُكِ ثَلاثاً لا رَجْعَةَ لي فيها، فَعَيْشُكِ قَصيرٌ، وخطَرُكِ يَسيرٌ، وأمَلُكِ حَقيرٌ، آهِ مِنْ قِلَّةِ الزَّادِ وطُولِ الطَّريقِ، وبُعدِ السَّفَرِ، وَعِظَمِ المَوْرِدِ.
ای دنیا، ای دنیا! از من دور شو. آیا خود را بر من عرضه می‌کنی یا مشتاقِ منی؟ هنگامِ تو نرسیده است. غیرِ مرا فریب ده که مرا در تو حاجتی نیست. تو را سه‌طلاقه طلاق دادم که بازگشتی در آن نیست. پس زندگی‌ات کوتاه و خطرت اندک و آرزویت حقیر است. آه از کمیِ توشه و درازیِ راه و دوریِ سفر و بزرگیِ منزل!
world, O world! Get away from me! Is it me that you present yourself to? Or is it I that you are eager for? May your time never come! Deceive some other person. I have no need for you. I have divorced you thrice, after which there is no reunion. Your life is short, your significance is little and your hope is worthless. Alas! How meagre the provision, how long the way, how distant the journey and how great the destination!
يا عَبيدَ الدُّنيا، والعامِلينَ لَها إذا كُنْتُمْ فِي النَّهارِ تَبيعُونَ وتَشْتَرُونَ، وَفِي اللَّيلِ على فُرُوشِكُمْ تَتَقَلَّبُونَ، وتَنامُونَ وفيما بينَ ذلِكَ عَنِ الآخِرَةِ تَغْفُلُونَ، وبِالعَمَلِ تُسَوِّفُونَ، فَمَتى تُفَكِّرُونَ فِي الإرْشادِ وتُقَدِّمُونَ الزَّادَ، وَمتى تَهْتَمُّونَ بِأمْرِ المَعادِ.
ای بندگانِ دنیا و کردارگران برای آن! اگر روز می‌فروشید و می‌خرید و شب بر بسترهایتان زیر و رو می‌شوید و می‌خوابید و در میانِ آن از آخرت غافلید و به عمل وعده‌های دور می‌دهید، پس کِی در هدایت بیندیشید و توشه پیش فرستید و کِی اندوهِ کارِ معاد خورید؟
servants of the world and those who work for it! When you are selling and buying in the day time and tossing in your beds and sleeping at night, and all the while you are oblivious to the Hereafter and postpone [good] actions, then when do you think of guidance and prepare your provisions, and when do you become concerned about the affairs of the Hereafter?
يا أيُّها النَّاسُ ازْهَدُوا فِي الدُّنيا، فَإنَّ عَيْشَها قَصيرٌ، وخَيْرَها يَسيرٌ، وَإنَّها لَدارُ شُخُوص، ومَحَلَّةُ تَنْغيص، وإنَّها لَتُدْني الآجالَ، وتَقْطَعُ الآمالَ، ألا وهيَ المُتَصَدِّيَةُ العَنُونُ، والجامِحَةُ الحَرُونُ، والمانِيَةُ (المائنةُ) الخَؤُونُ.
ای مردم! در دنیا بی‌رغبتی کنید؛ چرا که زندگی‌اش کوتاه و خیرش اندک است و آن خانهٔ کوچ و محلهٔ ناگواری است و اجل‌ها را نزدیک کند و آرزوها را بگسلد. آگاه باشید! همان روکنندهٔ سرکش و رمیدهٔ چموش و آرزودهندهٔ [یا دروغگوی] خیانت‌کار است.
people! Renounce the pleasures of this world, for indeed its life is short and its goodness is insignificant. It is a house of [inevitable] departure a place of discomfort. It brings closer the appointed terms and cuts short aspirations. Indeed it turns away and shuns [those who are after it], it is unruly and stubborn, it cheats and betrays.
الدُّنْيا تُغْوي.
دنیا گمراه کند.
This world misguides.
الدُّنْيا تَضُرُّ، اَلآخِرَةُ تَسُرُّ.
دنیا زیان رسانَد و آخرت شادمان کند.
This world harms, the Hereafter delights.
اَلدُّنْيا خُسْرانٌ.
دنیا زیان است.
This world is a loss [for those who seek it].
اَلدُّنْيا بِالاتِّفاقِ، اَلآخِرَةُ بِالاسْتِحقاقِ.
دنیا به تصادف است و آخرت به استحقاق.
This world is [obtained] by convention, the Hereafter is [gained] by merit.
اَلدُّنْيا بِالأمَلِ.
دنیا به آرزوست.
This world is [filled] with hope.
اَلدُّنْيا فانِيَةٌ.
دنیا فانی است.
This world is transient.
اَلدُّنْيا ظِلٌّ زائِلٌ.
دنیا سایه‌ای زایل است.
This world is a waning shadow.
اَلدُّنْيا سُوقُ الخُسْرانِ.
دنیا بازارِ زیان است.
This world is a market of loss.
اَلدُّنْيا مَزْرَعةُ الشَّـرِّ.
دنیا مزرعهٔ شرّ است.
This world is the plantation of evil.
