اِحْذَرِ الشَّرَهَ، فَكَمْ مِنْ أكْلَة مَـنَعَتْ أكلات.
از آز بپرهیز؛ چه بسیار لقمه‌ای که لقمه‌ها را بازداشت.
Beware of voraciousness, for how many a food has prevented numerous other foods [from being consumed]!

إيّاكَ والشَّـرَهَ، فَإنَّهُ يُفْسِدُ الْوَرَعَ، ويُدْخِلُ النّارَ.
از آز بپرهیز؛ چرا که پرهیزکاری را فاسد کند و به آتش درآرد.
You must refrain from voraciousness, for indeed it corrupts piety and causes one to enter the fire of hell.
إيّاكَ والشَّـرَهَ، فَإنَّهُ رَأسُ كُلِّ دَنِيَّة، وأُسُّ كُلِّ رَذيلَة.
از آز بپرهیز؛ چرا که سرِ هر پستی و بنیادِ هر رذیلت است.
Refrain from voraciousness, for verily it is the root of every vileness and the foundation of every depravity.
إيّاكُمْ ودَناءَةَ الشَّـرَهِ والطَّمَعِ، فَإنَّهُ رَأسُ كُلِّ شَـرّ، ومَزْرَعَةُ الذُّلِّ، وَمُهِينُ النَّفْسِ، ومُتْعِبُ الْجَسَدِ.
از پستیِ آز و طمع بپرهیزید؛ چرا که سرِ هر شر و مزرعهٔ خواری و خوارکنندهٔ جان و خسته‌کنندهٔ تن است.
Beware of the vileness of voraciousness and greed, for verily it is the root of all evil, the plantation of disgrace, the debaser of the soul and the exhauster of the body.
اَلشَّرَهُ مَذَلَّةٌ.
آز خواری است.
Voraciousness is [a cause of] ignominy.
اَلشَّـرَهُ داعِيَةُ الشَّـرِّ.
آز خوانندهٔ شر است.
Voraciousness invites [one] towards evil.
اَلشَّـرَهُ أوَّلُ الطَّمَعِ.
آز آغازِ طمع است.
Voraciousness is the beginning of avarice.
اَلشَّـرَهُ سَجيَّةُ الأرْجاسِ.
آز طبعِ پلیدان است.
Voraciousness is the trait of the filthy.
اَلشَّـرَهُ يُكْثِرُ الْغَضَبَ.
آز خشم را فزون کند.
Voraciousness increases anger.
اَلشَّـرَهُ جامِعٌ لِمَساوِي الْعُيُوبِ.
آز گردآورندهٔ بدی‌های عیوب است.
Voraciousness is an accumulator of the worst faults.
اَلشَّرَهُ أُسُّ كُلِّ شَـرّ.
آز بنیادِ هر شر است.
Voraciousness is the foundation of every evil.
اَلشَّـرَهُ مِنْ مَساوِي الأخْلاقِ.
آز از بدی‌های اخلاق است.
Voraciousness is from bad morals.
بِالشَّـرَهِ تُشانُ الأخْلاقُ.
به آز اخلاق زشت شود.
Through voraciousness morals are tainted.
بِئْسَ الطَّبْعُ الشَّـرَهُ.
چه بد طبعی است آز!
What a bad character trait voraciousness is!
ثَمَرَةُ الشَّـرَهِ اَلتَّهَجُّمُ عَلَى الْعُيُوبِ.
میوهٔ آز درآویختن به عیوب است.
The fruit of voraciousness is rushing towards faults [and vices].
رَأْسُ المَعائبِ الشَّـرَهُ.
سرِ عیب‌ها آز است.
The cornerstone of [all] flaws is voraciousness.
سِلاحُ الْحِرْصِ الشَّـرَهُ.
سلاحِ حرص آز است.
The weapon of avarice is voraciousness.
ضادُّوا الشَّـرَهَ بِالعِفَّةِ.
آز را با پاکدامنی در هم شکنید.
Counter voraciousness with chastity [and moderation].
كَفى بِالشَّـرَهِ هُلْكاً.
آز را برای هلاکت بس است.
Voraciousness is enough of a destruction.
لِكُلِّ شَيْء بَذْرٌ، وبَذْرُ الشَّـرِّ الشَّـرَهُ.
برای هر چیز بذری است و بذرِ شر آز است.
For everything there is a seed, and the seed of evil is voraciousness.
