كُلَّما عَظُمَ قَدْرُ الشَيْءِ المُنافَسِ عَلَيْهِ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ لِفَقْدِهِ.
هر چه قدرِ چیزِ موردِ رقابت بزرگ‌تر باشد، داغِ از دست دادنش بزرگ‌تر است.
Every time the value of a thing that is competed becomes great, the difficulty of losing it increases.
مَنْ لَمْ يَتَعَرَّضْ لِلنَّوائِبِ تَعَرَّضَتْ لَهُ النَّوائِبُ.
هر که خود را در معرضِ سختی‌ها نهد، سختی‌ها به او رسند؛ و هر که ننهد، سختی‌ها خود به او رسند.
One who does not prepare himself to confront hardships [with patience and supplication], the hardships befall him [while he is unprepared for them].
مَنْ أصْبَحَ يَشْكُو مُصيبَةً نَزَلَتْ بِهِ فَإنَّما يَشْكُو رَبَّهُ.
هر که بامداد کند و از مصیبتی که بر او فرود آمده شکایت کند، همانا از پروردگارش شکایت کرده است.
One who starts complaining about the hardship that has befallen him is actually only complaining against his Lord.
مَنْ لَهِيَ عَنِ الدُّنيا هانَتْ عَلَيْهِ المَصائِبُ.
هر که از دنیا غافل شود، مصیبت‌ها بر او آسان شود.
One who turns his attention away from this world, hardships become easy for him [to bear].
مَنْ ضَرَبَ يَدَهُ عَلى فَخِذِهِ عِنْدَ مُصيبَة فَقَدْ أحْبَطَ أجْرَهُ..
هر که هنگامِ مصیبت دستش را بر رانِ خود زند، پاداشش را بر باد داده است.
One who hits his hand on his thigh in times of hardship has nullified his reward.
مَنْ عَظَّمَ صِغارَ المَصائِبِ اِبْتَلاهُ اللّهُ بِكِبارِها.
هر که مصیبت‌های کوچک را بزرگ شمارد، خدا به بزرگ‌هایشان مبتلاش سازد.
One who exaggerates small hardships, Allah tries him with great ones.
مَنْ تَوالَتْ عَلَيْهِ نَـكِباتُ الزَّمانِ أكْسَبَتْهُ فَضيلَةَ الصَّبْرِ.
هر که ناکامی‌های روزگار بر او پی‌درپی شود، فضیلتِ صبر را برایش به دست آرَد.
One who faces successive calamities acquires the merit of patience through them.
مِنْ أعْظَمِ مَصائِبِ الأخْيارِ حاجَتُهُمْ إلى مُداراةِ الأشْرارِ.
از بزرگ‌ترینِ مصیبت‌های نیکان نیازشان به مدارا با بدان است.
One of the greatest hardships for the virtuous is having to socialize with the wicked.
ما أعْظَمَ المُصيبَةَ فِي الدُّنيا مَعَ عِظَمِ الفاقَةِ غَداً.
چه بزرگ است مصیبتِ دنیا با بزرگیِ نیازِ فردا!
How great is the hardship in this world when accompanied by the severe indigence of tomorrow (i.e. the Hereafter)!
مُصيبَةٌ في غَيْرِكَ لَكَ أجْرُها خَيْرٌ مِنْ مُصيبَة بِكَ لِغَيْرِكَ ثَوابُها وَأجْرُها.
مصیبتی در دیگری که پاداهش از تو باشد، بهتر است از مصیبتی در تو که پاداش و اجرش برای دیگری باشد.
A hardship that befalls others and has reward for you is better than the hardship that befalls you while its reward and recompense is for others.
مُصيبَةٌ يُرْجى خَيْرُها خَيْرٌ مِنْ نِعْمَة لايُؤَدّى شُكْرُها.
مصیبتی که خیرش امید رود، بهتر است از نعمتی که سپاسش به جا نیاورند.
A hardship from which good is expected is better than a blessing for which gratitude is not expressed.
كُنْ بِالبَلاءِ مَحْبُوراً، وبِالمَكارِهِ مَسْرُوراً.
به بلا شادمان باش و به ناخوشی‌ها مسرور.
Be happy with tribulation and pleased with affliction [as you will gain great reward for it].
أكْرَهُ المَكارِهِ فيما لايُحْتَسَبُ.
ناروا‌ترینِ ناخوشی‌ها آن است که به حساب نیاورندش.
The worst of adversities are those in which there is no reckoning [and recompense].
إنَّ عَظيمَ الأجْرِ مُقارِنٌ عَظيمَ البَلاءِ، فَإذا أحَبَّ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ قَوْماً اِبْتَلاهُمْ.
پاداشِ بزرگ همراهِ بلایِ بزرگ است؛ پس چون خدای سبحان قومی را دوست دارد، مبتلاشان سازد.
Verily great reward accompanies great trials; so when Allah, the Glorified, loves a community, He tries them.
المُتَعَرِّضُ لِلْبَلاءِ مُخاطِرٌ.
آن که خود را در معرضِ بلا نهد، در خطر است.
The one who exposes himself to affliction puts himself in danger.
اَلبَلاءُ رَديفُ الرَّخاءِ.
بلا هم‌رکابِ آسایش است.
Tribulation follows behind ease [and comfort].
رُبَّ مَرْحُوم مِنْ بَلاء هُوَ دَواؤُهُ.
بسا رنجوری‌شده‌ای از بلایی که آن بلای او درمانش باشد.
Many a person is shown sympathy for an affliction that is [actually] his cure.
رُبَّ مُبْتَليً مَصْنُوعٌ لَهُ (إلَيهِ) بِالبَلْوى.
بسا مبتلایی که به بلا موردِ لطفِ او [یا به او] قرار گرفته است.
Many a person who is afflicted is made stronger by his affliction.
عَلى قَدْرِ النَّعْماءِ يَكُونُ مَضَضُ البَلاءِ.
به اندازهٔ نعمت‌ها دردِ بلا باشد.
The distress of tribulation [one faces] is proportionate to the blessings [one receives].
