آرزو عمل را تباه و اجل را فنا کند.

Hope corrupts [one’s] actions and wastes [one’s] lifetime.

اَلأمانيُّ تُعْمي عُيُونَ البَصائِرِ.

آرزوها چشمِ بصیرت‌ها را کور کند.

Aspirations blind the eyes of insight.

اَلأمانيُّ تَخْدَعُكَ، وعِنْدَ الحَقائقِِ تَدَعُكَ.

آرزوها فریبت دهند و چون حقیقت‌ها رسد، رهایت کنند.

Aspirations beguile you, and in the presence of reality, they abandon you.

إنّي مُحاربُ أمَلي، ومُنْتَظِرُ أجَلي.

من با آرزویم در جنگم و در انتظار اجلم.

Verily I am fighting against my hopes and waiting for my death.

إنّكَ لَنْ تَبْلُغَ أمَلَكَ، وَلَنْ تَعدُوَ أجَلَكَ، فَاتَّقِ اللّهَ، وأجْمِلْ في الطَّلَبِ.

تو نه به آرزویت رسی و نه از اجلت درگذری؛ پس تقوای خدا پیشه کن و در طلب نیکویی کن.

Verily you will not reach what you hope for and will never surpass death, so be conscious of Allah and be moderate in your desires.

إنَّكُمْ إنِ اغْتَرَرْتُمْ بِالآمالِ، تَخَرَّمَتْكُمْ بَوادِرُ الآجالِ وقَدْ ماتَتْكُمُ الأعْمالُ.

اگر به آرزوها فریفته شوید، شمشیرهای اجل شما را درو کند، در حالی که اعمالتان مرده است [کوتاهی کرده‌اید].

If you are deceived by hopes, you will surely be annihilated by the fast approaching death and will have lost [the opportunity to perform] good deeds.

آفَةُ الآمالِ حُضُورُ الآجالِ.

آفت آرزوها رسیدن اجل‌هاست.

The bane of hopes is the coming of death.

آفت آرزو، اجل است.

بِبُلُوغِ الآمالِ يَهُونُ رُكُوبُ الأهْوالِ.

به رسیدن آرزوهاست که دلیر شدن در مهلکه‌ها آسان آید.

With the realization of hopes, it becomes easier to overcome [one’s] fears.

بِئْسَ الشّيمَةُ الأمَلُ يُفْنِي الأجَلَ، ويُفَوِّتُ العَمَلَ.

آرزو چه بد خویی است که اجل را فنا و عمل را فوت کند!

The worst habit is hoping [for too much] as it wastes one’s lifetime and causes one to lose [the opportunity to perform good] deeds.

تَجَنَّبُوا المُنى، فإنَّها تَذْهَبُ بِبَهجَةِ نِعَمِ اللّهِ عِنْدَكُمْ، وتُلْزِمُ إسْتِصْغارَها لَدَيْكُمْ، وَعلى قِلَّةِ الشُّكرِ مِنْكُمْ.

از آرزوها بپرهیزید که بهجتِ نعمت‌های خدا را نزدتان بَرَد و حقیر شمردنشان را بر شما لازم آوَرَد و کم‌شکری‌تان را.

Keep away from vain hopes, for they take away the delight of the blessings of Allah from you and make them seem small and insignificant, thereby increasing your lack of gratitude.

ثَمَرَةُ الأمَلِ فَسادُ العَمَلِ.

میوهٔ آرزو تباهیِ عمل است.

The fruit of hope is corruption of deeds.

حاصِلُ الأمانِي، الأسَفُ (وَ ثَمرَتُهُ التَّلَفُ).

دستاورد آرزوها افسوس است [و میوه‌اش تباهی].

The product of aspirations is regret (and its fruit is loss).
