ما أفْسَدَ الأمَلَ لِلْعَمَلِ.
چه بسیار آرزو که عمل را تباه کند!
How corrupting is hope for deeds!
ما أقْطعَ الأجَلَ للأمَلِ.
چه بسیار برّنده است اجل برای آرزو!
How severing is death for hope!
ما أطالَ أحدٌ في الأمَلِ إلاّ قَصَّـَر فِي العَمَلِ.
هیچ‌کس آرزو دراز نکرد، مگر آن‌که در عمل کوتاه آمد.
No one lengthens his hopes except that he [also] curtails his actions.
ما لَكُمْ تُؤَمِّلُونَ ما لاتُدْرِكُونَهُ، وتَجْمَعُونَ مالا تأكُلُونَهُ، وَتَبْنُونَ ما لا تَسْكُنُونَهُ؟
شما را چه می‌شود که امید آنچه را دارید که بدان نرسید و گرد می‌آورید آنچه را نمی‌خورید و می‌سازید آنچه را در آن نزیید؟
What is the matter with you? You hope for that which you do not achieve, amass wealth which you do not use and build houses which you do not occupy!
ماأطال اَحَدٌ الأمَلَ إلاَّ نَسيَ الأجَلَ، وأساءَ العَمَلَ.
هیچ‌کس آرزو دراز نکرد، مگر آن‌که اجل را فراموش کرد و عمل را زشت گرداند.
No one lengthens his hopes except that he forgets death and performs evil actions.
نِعْمَ عَوْنُ العَمَلِ قَصْـرُ الأمَلِ.
نیکو یاورِ عمل، کوتاه‌کردن آرزوست.
The best assistance for action is curtailing hopes.
لا تَغُرَّنَّكَ الأمانيُّ والخُدَعُ، فَكفى بِذلِكَ خُرْقاً.
آرزوها و فریب‌ها مغرورت نسازد که همین خود بی‌خِرَدی بس است.
Let aspirations and ploys not deceive you, for this suffices as ineptness.
لاغارَّ أخْدَعُ مِنَ الأمَلِ.
هیچ فریبنده‌ای فریبکارتر از آرزو نیست.
No deception is more misleading than hope.
لاشَيْءَ أكْذَبُ مِنَ الأمَلِ.
هیچ چیز دروغ‌تر از آرزو نیست.
Nothing is more untrue than hope.
لاتَفِى الأمانيُّ لِمَنْ عَوَّلَ عَلَيْها.
آرزوها وفا نکنند با آن که بدان اعتماد کند.
Aspirations are not loyal to those who rely on them.
يَسيرُ الأمَلِ يُوجِبُ فَسادَ العَمَلِ.
اندک آرزو [هم] تباهیِ عمل آوَرَد.
The smallest of hopes leads to corruption of actions.
إحْذَرُوا الأمانيَّ، فَإنَّها مَنايا مُحَقَقَةٌ.
از آرزوها برحذر باشید که مرگ‌های حتمی‌اند.
Be wary of [false] aspirations, for verily they are certain [causes of] deaths.
إيّاكَ والإتِّكالَ عَلَى المُنى، فَإنَّها مِنْ بَضائِعِ النَّوْكى.
به آرزوها تکیه مکن که آن از سرمایه‌های ابلهان است.
Be cautious not to depend on hopes, for they are the wares of the unintelligent.
أنْفَعُ الدَّواءِ تَرْكُ المُنى.
سودمندترینِ درمان‌ها ترک آرزوهاست.
The most beneficial cure is abandoning [false] aspirations.
الأمانيُّ أشتاتٌ.
آرزوها پراکنده‌اند.
Aspirations are scattered [and dispersed].
اَلأمانِىُّ تُُخْدَعُ.
آرزوها فریب دهند.
Aspirations delude.
اَلأمانيُّ شَيْمَةُ الحَمْقاءِ.
آرزوپردازی خوی احمقان است.
False aspiration is the trait of fools.
طاعةُ الأمَلِ، تُفْسِدُ العَمَلَ.
فرمان‌بردن از آرزو، عمل را تباه کند.
Submission to hope corrupts [one’s] actions.
عِنْدَ حُضُورِ الاجالِ تَظْهَرُ خَيْبَةُ الآمالِ.
چون اجل‌ها دررسند، نومیدیِ امیدها آشکار شود.
It is when death comes that the failure of hopes becomes apparent.
