اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ تَوَرَّعَ عَنِ الذُّنُوبِ، وتَنَزَّهَ مِنَ العُيُوبِ.
خردمند آن است که از گناهان پرهیز کند و خود را از عیب‌ها دور دارد.
The intelligent person is one who abstains from sins and keeps himself free from faults.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ عَقَلَ لِسانَهُ إلاّ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللّهِ.
خردمند آن است که زبان خود را مهار کند، جز از یادِ خدا.
The intelligent person is one who fetters his tongue except from the remembrance [and extolment] of Allah.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ عَصى هَواهُ في طاعَةِ رَبِّهِ.
خردمند آن است که در فرمان‌برداریِ پروردگارش هوا را نافرجام گرداند.
The intelligent person is one who opposes his vain desire in obedience to his Lord.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ أحْسَنَ صَنائِعَهُ، وَوَضَعَ سَعْيَهُ في مَواضِعِهِ.
خردمند آن است که کارهایش را نیکو کند و کوششش را در جایگاهش بگمارد.
The intelligent person is one who performs acts of kindness and puts his effort in its correct place.
اَلعاقِلُ إذا سَكَتَ فَكَرَ، وإذا نَطَقَ ذَكَرَ، وإذا نَظَرَ اِعْتَبـَرَ.
خردمند چون خاموش شد اندیشد، و چون سخن گفت یاد کند، و چون نگریست پند گیرد.
When the intelligent one is quiet, he reflects and when he speaks, he remembers [and extols Allah] and when he observes, he takes lesson.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنِ اتَّهَمَ رَأيَهُ، ولَمْ يَثِقْ بِكُلِّ ما تُسَوِّلُ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ.
خردمند آن است که به رأی خود گمانِ بد دارد و به هر آنچه نفسش برایش زیبا کند اعتماد نمی‌کند.
The intelligent person is one who suspects his [own] opinion and does not trust everything that his self makes decorous for him.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ زَهِدَ في دُنْيا فانِيَة دَنِيَّة، ورَغِبَ في جَنَّة سَنِيَّة خالِدَة عالِيَة.
خردمند آن است که از دنیاِ فانی و پست روی‌گردان و به بهشتِ والای جاودان رغبت ورزد.
The intelligent person is one who abstains from [the pleasures of] the lowly, perishing world and desires the sublime, everlasting, lofty Paradise.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ وَضَعَ الأشْياءَ مَواضِعَها، والجاهِلُ ضِدُّ ذلِكَ.
خردمند آن است که هر چیز را در جایگاهش بگمارد و نادان برعکسِ اوست.
The intelligent person is one who puts things in their right places, and the ignorant one does the opposite of this.
اَلعاقِلُ إذا عَلِمَ عَمِلَ، وإذا عَمِلَ أخْلَصَ، وإذا أخْلَصَ اِعْتَزَلَ.
خردمند چون بداند عمل کند، و چون عمل کند خالص کند، و چون خالص کند، از مردم روی‌گردان شود (گوشه گیرد).
The intelligent person acts when he knows and when he acts, he does so sincerely, and when he becomes sincere, he secludes himself [from others].
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ صانَ لِسانَهُ عَنِ الغِيْبَةِ.
خردمند آن است که زبانش را از غیبت پاسبان دارد.
The intelligent person is one who guards his tongue from backbiting.
اَلعاقِلُ يَجْتَهِدُ في عَمَلِهِ ويُقَصِّرُ مِنْ أمَلِهِ.
خردمند در کارش بذلِ جهد کند و آرزویش را کوتاه دارد.
The intelligent person strives in his work and shortens his hopes.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ، ولَمْ يَبِـعْ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْياهُ.
خردمند آن است که بر هوا چیره شود و آخرتش را در برابرِ دنیا نفروشد.
The intelligent person is one who overcomes his vain desire and does not sell his Hereafter for his [temporary life in this] world.
اَلعاقِلُ لايَفْرُطُ بِهِ عُنْفٌ، وَلايَقْعُدُ بِهِ ضَعْفٌ.
خردمند نه به خشونت افراط کند و نه به ضعف بنشیند.
The intelligent one is neither pushed to the extreme by violence nor is he hampered by weakness.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ إذا غَضِبَ، وإذا رَغِبَ وإذا رَهِبَ.
خردمند آن است که خویشتن را در خشم، در خواهش و در ترس به دست دارد.
The intelligent person is one who controls himself when he gets angry, when he desires and when he is frightened.
اَلعاقِلُ يَتَقاضى نفْسَه ُبِما يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ، ولا يَتَقاضى لِنَفْسِهِ بِما يَجِبُ لَهُ.
خردمند از خویشتن در آنچه بر او واجب است مطالبه کند و برای خویشتن در آنچه حقش است مطالبه نکند.
The intelligent person charges himself with performing that which is obligatory upon him and he does not charge himself with seeking that which is due to him.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ لايُضيعُ لَهُ نَفَساً فيما لايَنْفَعُهُ، ولايَقْتَني ما لايَصْحَبُهُ.
خردمند آن است که از نفسی در آنچه سودش ندارد ضایع نکند و آنچه را که با او همراه نمی‌شود نمی‌جوید.
The intelligent person is one who does not waste his [time and] energy in that which does not benefit him, and does not [strive to] acquire that which will not accompany him [after his death].
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ غَلَبَ نَوازِعَ أهْوِيَتِهِ.
خردمند آن است که بر نوازِ هواهایش چیره شود.
The intelligent person is one who overpowers his contending vain desires.
اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ سَلَّمَ إلَى القَضاءِ، وعَمِلَ بِالحَزْمِ.
خردمند آن است که به سرنوشت (قدیر) تسلیم شود و با تدبیر (حزم) کار کند.
The intelligent person is one who submits to the decree [of Allah] and acts with judiciousness [and determination].
اَلعاقِلُ (الكاملُ) مَنْ قَمَعَ هَواهُ بِعَقْلِهِ.
خردمند (کامل) آن است که هوا را به خرد فرونشاند.
The intelligent person is one who subdues his vain desire with his intellect.
