اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ يَزْهَدُ فيما يَرْغَبُ فيهِ الجاهِلُ.
خردمند آن است که از آنچه نادان آن را می‌خواهد روی‌گردان شود.
The intelligent person is one who renounces that which the ignorant one desires.
إنَّما العاقِلُ مَنْ وَعَظَتْهُ التَّجارِبُ.
خردمند جز آن نیست که تجربه‌ها او را پند دهند.
Indeed only he is intelligent who is admonished by experiences.
إنَّما اللَّبِيبُ مَنِ اسْتَسَلَّ الأحْقادَ.
دانا جز آن نیست که کینه‌ها را از دل بیرون کند.
Only he is intelligent who takes out the grudges [from his heart].
إذا شابَ العاقِلُ شَبَّ عَقْلُهُ.
چون خردمند پیر شود، خردش جوان گردد.
As the intelligent one grows older, his intellect grows younger.
تَلْويحُ زَلَّةِ العاقِلِ لَهُ مِنْ أمَضِّ عِتابِهِ (أمَضَّ مِنْ عِتابهِ).
ایهامِ لغزشِ خردمند، از تلخ‌ترین ملامت‌های اوست.
Hinting at [and making indirect references to] the error of the intelligent person is one of the most agonizing punishments for him.
ثَرْوَةُ العاقِلِ في عِلْمِهِ وعَمَلِهِ.
توانگریِ خردمند در دانش و کردارش است.
The wealth of an intelligent person is in his knowledge and his action.
حُبُّ العِلْمِ، وحُسْنُ الحِلْمِ، ولُزومُ الصَّوابِ مِنْ فَضائِلِ أُولِي النُّهى والألْبابِ.
دوست‌داشتنِ دانش، نیکوییِ بردباری، و پایبندی به درستی، از فضایلِ صاحبانِ خرد و درایت است.
Love of knowledge, virtuous forbearance and adhering to the right are from the merits of the people of reason and understanding.
حَقٌّ عَلَى العاقِلِ العَمَلُ لِلْمَعادِ، والاِسْتِكْثارُ مِنَ الزّادِ.
بر خردمند واجب است که برای بازگشت (آخرت) بسازد و توشه‌اش را افزون کند.
It is a right that is due on the intelligent one to work for the Hereafter and to seek more provisions [for it].
حَقٌّ عَلَى العاقِلِ أنْ يَقْهَرَ هَواهُ قَبْلَ ضِدِّهِ.
بر خردمند واجب است که پیش از دشمنش هوا را چیره گردد.
It is a right upon the intelligent one to vanquish his vain desire before his adversary.
دَوْلَةُ العاقِلِ كَالنَّسيبِ يَحِنُّ إلَى الوُصْلَةِ.
فرمانرواییِ خردمند چون خویشاوندی است که به پیوندی تشنه است.
The reign of the intelligent one is like the relative who longs to unite [with his dear ones].
ذُوالعَقْلِ لايَنْكَشِفُ إلاّ عَنِ احْتِمال، وإجْمال، وإفْضال.
خردمند جز به بردباری، میانه‌روی و بخشندگی آشکار نمی‌شود.
The one who possesses intellect is not known except by [his] tolerance, temperance and kindness.
رَغْبَةُ العاقِلِ فِي الحِكْمَةِ، وهِمَّةُ الجاهِلِ فِي الحَماقَةِ.
خواستهٔ خردمند در حکمت است و همتِ نادان در ابلهی.
The desire of an intelligent person is in wisdom and the ambition of an ignorant person is in foolishness.
زَلَّةُ العاقِلِ مَحْذُورَةٌ.
لغزشِ خردمند خطرناک است.
The lapse of an intelligent person is dangerous.
زَلَّةُ العاقِلِ شَديدَةُ النِّكايَةِ.
لغزشِ خردمند شدیدِ زیان است.
The lapse of an intelligent person is a crushing blow.
سُلْطانُ العاقِلِ يَنْشُرُ مَناقِبَهُ.
فرمانرواییِ خردمند منقبت‌هایش را پهن کند.
The virtues of an intelligent ruler are spread far and wide.
شيمَةُ العُقَلاءِ قِلَّةُ الشَّهْوَةِ، وقِلَّةُ الغَفْلَةِ.
خویِ خردمندان، کم‌هوایی و کم‌غفلتی است.
The [distinguishing] quality of the people of intellect is [their] lack of lust and negligence.
شيمَةُ ذَوِى الألْبابِ والنُّهى اَلإقْبالُ على دارِ البَقاءِ، والإعْراضُ عَنْ دارِ الفَناءِ، وَالتَّوَلُّهُ بِجَنَّةِ المَأْوى.
خویِ صاحبانِ خرد و درایت، نگرش به خانهٔ بقاء، روی‌گردانی از خانهٔ فناء، و رغبت به بهشتِ پناهگاه است.
The quality of those who possess intellect and understanding is [their] turning towards the Eternal Abode, turning away from the evanescent abode, and yearning for the Garden of Paradise.
صَدْرُ العاقِلِ صُنْدُوقُ سِـرِّهِ.
سینهٔ خردمند صندوقِ رازِ اوست.
The chest of an intelligent person is the strongbox of his secret.
ظَنُّ العاقِلِ أصَحُّ مِنْ يَقينِ الجاهِلِ.
گمانِ خردمند درست‌تر از یقینِ نادان است.
The conjecture of an intelligent person is more correct than the certitude of an ignorant person.
