اَلعالِمُ مَنْ عَرَفَ قَدْرَهُ.
دانشمند آن است که قدرِ خود را بداند.
The scholar is one who knows his [own] status [and worth].
اَلعالِمُ يَنْظُرُ بِقَلْبِهِ وَخاطِرِهِ، اَلجاهِلُ يَنْظُرُ بِعَيْنِهِ وَناظِرهِ.
دانشمند با دل و خاطرش بیند و نادان با چشم و چشمش.
The scholar sees with his heart and his mind while the ignorant one sees with his eyes and his eyesight.
اَلعالِمُ الَّذي لايَمُلُّ مِنْ تَعَلُّمِ العِلْمِ.
دانشمند آن است که از آموختنِ دانش خسته نشود.
The scholar is a person who does not get weary of gaining knowledge.
اَلعُلَماءُ باقُونَ ما بَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ والنَّهارُ.
دانشمندان تا زمانی که شب و روز باقی است باقی‌اند.
Scholars live on as long as the day and night remains.
اَلْكاتِمُ لِلْعِلْمِ غَيْـرُ واثِق بِالإصابَةِ فيهِ.
پنهان‌کنندهٔ دانش، از درستیِ خود در آن مطمئن نیست.
The concealer of knowledge is not certain of being correct in it.
إنَّمَـا العالِمُ مَنْ دَعاهُ عِلْمُهُ إلَى الوَرَعِ والتُّقى، والزُّهْدِ في عالَمِ الفَناءِ، والتَّوَلُّهِ بِجَنَّةِ المَأْوى.
دانشمند جز آن نیست که دانشش او را به پرهیزگاری و تقوا و زهد در جهانِ فانی و رغبت به بهشتِ پناهگاه فراخواند.
Only he is a scholar whose knowledge calls him to piety and God-wariness, to abstinence from the pleasures of the transient world and to infatuation with the heavenly abode.
آفَةُ العُلَماءِ حُبُّ الرِّياسَةِ.
آفتِ دانشمندان، دوست‌داشتنِ ریاست است.
The bane of scholars is love for leadership [and authority].
إذا رَأيْتَ عالِماً فَكُنْ لَهُ خادِماً.
چون دانشمندی دیدی، بر او بنده شو.
When you see a [true] scholar, be a servant to him.
بَخّ بَخّ لِعالِم عَلِمَ فَكَفَّ، وخافَ البَياتَ فَأعَدَّ واسْتَعَدَّ، إنْ سُئِلَ أفْصَحَ، وإنْ تُرِكَ سَكَتَ (صَمَتَ)، كَلامُهُ صَوابٌ، وسُكُوتُهُ عَنْ غَيْـرِ عَيّ عَنِ الجَوابِ.
بخت‌بخت بر دانشمندی که بداند و بازایستد، و از هجومِ ناگهانی (مرگ) بیمناک شود تا آماده‌گی و آمادگی پیش گیرد؛ اگر پرسیده شود فصاحت کند و اگر وا نهاده شود خاموش ماند؛ سخنش درست و خاموشی‌اش از ناتوانی در پاسخ نیست.
Congratulations to the scholar who knows and thus restrains himself [from sin], and who fears the sudden coming [of death] so he prepares himself and gets ready. If he is questioned he articulates, and if he is left he remains silent; his speech is accurate and his silence is not because of his inability to give an answer.
جالِسِ العُلَماءَ تَسْعَدْ.
نزدِ دانشمندان بنشین تا خوشبخت شوی.
Sit in the company of scholars and you will be felicitous.
جالِسِ العُلَماءَ تَزْدَدْ عِلْماً.
نزدِ دانشمندان بنشین تا دانشت افزون شود.
Sit in the company of scholars and you will increase your knowledge.
جَمالُ العالِمِ عَمَلُهُ بِعِلْمِهِ.
زیباییِ دانشمند عملِ او به دانشش است.
The beauty of a scholar is [in] his acting upon his knowledge.
جالِسِ العُلَماءَ، يَزْدَدْ عِلْمُكَ، ويَحْسُنْ أدَبُكَ، وتَزْكُ نَفْسُكَ.
نزدِ دانشمندان بنشین تا دانشت افزون شود، ادبت نیکو گردد و جانت پاک شود.
Sit with the scholars and your knowledge will increase, your etiquette will improve and your soul will become purified.
جاوِرِ العُلَماءَ تَسْتَبْصِرْ.
به دانشمندان یاور شو تا بینا گردی.
Be close to the scholars and you will perceive.
رُبَّ عالِم قَتَلَهُ عِلْمُهُ.
بسیار دانشمندی که دانشش او را کشته است.
Many a scholar is killed by his knowledge.
رُبَّ مُدَّع لِلْعِلْمِ لَيْسَ بِعالِم.
بسیار مدعیِ دانشی که دانشمند نیست.
Many a person who claims to have knowledge is not a scholar.
رُبَّ عالِم غَيْرُ مُنْتَفِع.
بسیار دانشمندی که بهره‌ای نبوده است.
Many a scholar does not benefit [from his knowledge].
رُتْبَةُ العالِمِ أعْلَى المَراتِبِ.
مرتبهٔ دانشمند بلندترینِ مراتب است.
The rank of a scholar is the highest of ranks.
زَلَّةُ العالِمِ تُفْسِدُ عَوالِمَ.
لغزشِ دانشمند جوامع را تباه کند.
The lapse [and misguidance] of a scholar corrupts entire worlds.
