مَنْ أمِنَ الزَّمانَ خانَهُ، ومَنْ أعْظَمَهُ أهانَهُ.
هر که زمان را ایمن شمرد، او را خیانت کند و هر که او را بزرگ شمرد، او را خوار کند.
Whoever feels safe from time is betrayed by it and whoever regards it as great is humiliated by it.

مَنْ لاحَى الرِّجالَ كَثُرَ أعْدائُهُ.
هر که با مردم فحاشی (خصومت) کند، دشمنانش افزون شود.
Whoever insults [and disputes with] the people, his enemies increase.
اَللَّذَّةُ تُلْهي.
لذت، سرگرم (غافل) کند.
Pleasure distracts.
اَللَّذّاتُ مُفْسِداتٌ.
لذت‌ها، تباه‌کننده‌اند.
Pleasures are corrupters.
اَللَّذّاتُ آفاتٌ.
لذت‌ها، بلاها‌اند.
Pleasures are woes.
رَأْسُ الآفاتِ الوَلَهُ بِاللَّذّاتِ.
بنیادِ بلاها، شیفتگی به لذت‌هاست.
The root of [all] woes is being distracted by [worldly] pleasures.
رُبَّ لَذَّة فيها الحِمامُ.
بسیار لذتی که مرگ در آن پنهان است.
Many a pleasure has death [hidden] in it.
قَلَّ مَنْ غَرِىَ بِاللَّذّاتِ إلاّ كانَ بِها هَلاكُهُ.
کم‌اند آنان که به لذت‌ها فریب خورده‌اند مگر آنکه هلاکتشان به سببش باشد.
Few are those who are enticed by pleasures but that their destruction is caused by it.
كَمْ مِنْ لَذَّة دَنِيَّة مَـنَعَتْ سَنِيَّ دَرَجات.
چه بسیار لذتی پست که از مقام‌هایِ والا بازداشته است.
How many a vile pleasure has prevented one from [attaining] lofty stations.
مَا الْتَذَّ أحَدٌمِنَ الدُّنْيا لَذَّةً إلاّ كانَتْ لَهُ يَوْمَ القِيمَةِ غُصَّةً.
هیچ‌کس به لذتی از دنیا لذت نبَرَد مگر آنکه روزِ قیامت، غصه‌ای بر او باشد.
Nobody delights in any of the pleasures of this world but that it will be a distress for him on the Day of Resurrection.
لاخَيْرَ في لَذَّة لاتَبْقى.
در لذتی که باقی نمی‌ماند نیکی نیست.
There is no good in a pleasure that does not last.
لالَذَّةَ في شَهْوَة فانِيَة.
در هوایِ فانی لذتی نیست.
There is no pleasure in transient desires.
لاتَفي لَذَّةُ المَعْصِيَةِ بِعِقابِ النّارِ.
لذتِ گناه، به عذابِ آتش نمی‌رسد.
The pleasure of disobedience is not worth the chastisement of hellfire.
لاتَقُومُ حَلاوَةُ اللَّذَّةِ بِمَرارَةِ الآفاتِ.
شیرینیِ لذت، به تلخیِ بلایا نمی‌رسد.
The sweetness of [worldly] pleasure does not compensate for the bitterness of adversities.
لاتُوازي لَذَّةُ المَعْصِيَةِ فُضُوحَ الآخِرَةِ وأليمَ العُقُوباتِ.
لذتِ گناه، با رسواییِ آخرت و دردِ عقوبت‌ها برابر نیست.
The pleasure of disobedience does not equate to the disgrace in the Hereafter and its painful chastisements.
لاخَيْرَ في لَذَّة تُوجِبُ نَدَماً، وشَهْوَة يُعْقِبُ ألَماً.
در لذتی که پشیمانی را در پی دارد و هوایی که اندوه را به دنبال دارد نیکی نیست.
There is no good in the pleasure that brings about regret and the desire that is followed by pain.
أُذْكُرْ مَعَ كُلِّ لَذَّة زَوالَها، ومَعَ كُلِّ نِعْمَة اِنْتِقالَها، وَمَعَ كُلِّ بَلِيَّة كَشْفَها، فَإنَّ ذلِكَ أبْقى لِلنِّعْمَةِ، وأنْفى لِلشَّهْوَةِ، وأذْهَبُ لِلْبَطَرِ، وأقْرَبُ إلَى الفَرَجِ، وَأجْدَرُ بِكَشْفِ الغُمَّةِ ودَرْكِ المَأّْمُولِ.
با هر لذتی زوالش و با هر نعمتی انتقالش و با هر بلایی کشف (گشایش)ش را به یاد آر؛ که همانا این، نعمت را ماندگارتر و هوا را دورتر و بطر را دورتر و گشایش را نزدیک‌تر و گشودنِ غمه و رسیدنِ به آرزو را آسان‌تر کند.
With every pleasure remember its [eventual] end, and with every blessing [recall] its removal, and with every hardship its [ultimate] relief; for indeed this makes the blessings last longer, subdues lustful desires more, takes vanity further away, brings relief closer, and is more conducive for the relieving of distress and attainment of aspirations.
اَللِّسانُ مِعْيارٌ أرْجَحَهُ العَقْلُ، وأطاشَهُ الجَهْلُ.
زبان، ترازویی است که خرد آن را سنگین و جهل آن را سبک کرده است.
The tongue is a gauge that is given weight by the intellect and made light by ignorance.
أُخْزُنْ لِسانَكَ، كَما تَخْزُنُ ذَهَبَكَ ووَرِقَكَ.
زبانت را چون طلا و نقره‌ات را گنج (حفظ) کن.
Safeguard your tongue just as you treasure your gold and your money.
اِحْفَظْ رَأسَكَ مِنْ عَثْرَةِ لِسانِكَ، وازْمُمْهُ بِالنُّهى والحَزْمِ، والتُّقى، وَالعَقْلِ.
سر را از لغزشِ زبان پاسبان دار و به خرد و تدبیر و تقوا و عقل بندش کن.
Protect your head from the slips of your tongue, and constrain it with reason, judiciousness, God-wariness and intellect.
