رُبَّ مَلُوم ولاذَنْبَ لَهُ.
بسیار سرزنش‌شده‌ای که گناهی ندارد.
Many a person who is reproached has done nothing wrong.
عِنْدَ كَثْرَةِ العِثارِ والزَّلَلِ تَكْثُرُ المَلامَةُ.
چون لغزش و خطا فزون شود، سرزنش فزون شود.
When slips and errors increase, reproach increases.
قَدْ يَنْجَعُ المَلامُ.
گاه سرزنش، سودمند (اثر) شود.
Blame may at times be beneficial.
اَلتَّقْريعُ أحَدُ العُقُوبَتَيْنِ.
سرزنش (تقریع)، یکی از دو عقوبت است.
Reproof is one of the two punishments.
إعادَةُ التَّقْريعِ أشَدُّ مِنْ مَضَضِ الضَّرْبِ.
تکرارِ سرزنش، از دردِ چوب سخت‌تر است.
Repetition of [the] reprimand is more severe than the pain of a beating.
كَثْرَةُ التَّقْـريعِ تُوغِرُ القُلُوبَ، وتُوحِشُ الأصْحابَ.
بسیارِ سرزنش، دل‌ها را کینه‌ور و یاران را بیگانه کند.
Too much reproof instils hatred in the hearts and alienates the companions.
مَنْ كَثُرَ لَوْمُهُ كَثُرَ عارُهُ.
هر که سرزنشش فزون شود، عارش فزون شود.
One whose reproach increases, his disgrace increases.
لايَلُمْ لائِمٌ إلا ّ نَفْسَهُ. [^1]: Or: The thing of least importance is the censure of the ignorant ones.
سرزنش‌گر جز خود را سرزنش نکند.
The blamer should not blame anyone but himself.
اَللَّهْوُ يُفْسِدُ عَزائِمَ الجِدِّ.
لهو (سرگرمیِ بیهوده)، عزمِ جدّ (جدی‌گری) را تباه کند.
Amusement corrupts serious resolutions.
أُهْجُرِ اللَّهْوَ فَإنَّكَ لَمْ تُخْلَقْ عَبَثاً فَتَلْهُوَ،وَ لَمْ تُتْرَكْ سُدىً فَتَلْغُوَ.
لهو را واگذار، که همانا تو را بی‌حاصل نیافریدند تا لهو کنی و تو را بیهوده رها ننهاده‌اند تا لغو (بیهوده‌گویی) کنی.
Keep away from amusements for indeed you have not been created aimlessly so that you may be amused, and you have not been left without purpose so that you may indulge in vanities.
أبْعَدُ النّاسِ عَنِ الصَّلاحِ المُسْتَهْتَرُ بِاللَّهْوِ.
دورترینِ مردم از صلاح، غرق‌شده در لهوست.
The furthest of all people from righteousness is one who is [excessively] fond of amusement.
أوَّلُ اللَّهْوِ لَعْبٌ، وآخِـرُهُ حَرْبٌ.
آغازِ لهو، بازی و فرجامش، جنگ است.
The beginning of amusement is play and its end is war.
أبْعَدُ النّاسِ مِنَ النَّجاحِ اَلمُسْتَهْتَرُ بِاللَّهْوِ والمَزاحِ.
دورترینِ مردم از موفقیت، غرق‌شده در لهو و شوخی است.
The furthest of all people from prosperity is one who is fond of amusement and jest.
اللَّهْوُ مِنْ ثِمارِ الجَهْلِ.
لهو، از میوه‌هایِ جهل است.
Amusement is from the fruits of ignorance.
اَللَّهْوُ قُوتُ الحَماقَةِ.
لهو، روزیِ ابله‌گری است.
Amusement is the provision of foolishness.
رُبَّ لَهْو يُوحِشُ حُرّاً.
بسیار لهویی که آزاد را بیگانه کند.
Many an amusement alienates a freeman.
شَرُّ ما ضُيِّعَ فيهِ العُمْرُ اللَّعْبُ.
زشت‌ترین چیزی که عمر در آن ضایع شود، بازی (لهو) است.
The worst thing that one’s lifetime can be wasted on is idle sport.
مَنْ كَثُرَ لَهْوُهُ اُسْتُحْمِقَ.
هر که لهوش فزون شود، ابله شمرده شود.
One whose amusement increases is considered a fool.
مَنْ كَثُرَ لَهْوُهُ قَلَّ عَقْلُهُ.
هر که لهوش فزون شود، خردش کمتر شود.
One whose amusement increases, his intelligence decreases.
