أحَقُّ النّاسِ بِالرَّحْمَةِ عالِمٌ يَجْرِي عَلَيْهِ حُكْمُ جاهِل، وكَريمٌ يَسْتَوْلِي عَلَيْهِ لَئِيمٌ، وبَرٌّ تَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِ فاجِرٌ.
شایسته‌ترینِ مردم به ترحم سه تنند: دانایی که حکمِ نادان بر او روان گردد، بزرگواری که فرومایه‌ای بر او چیره شود، و نیکوکاری که گناهکاری بر او تسلط یابد.
Of all the people, the most deserving of compassion are: the scholar upon whom an ignorant person passes judgment, the noble person who is dominated by a vile person and the virtuous person who is under the command of a vicious person.
أفْضَلُ النّاسِ فِي الدُّنيا اَلأسْخِياءُ، وفِي الآخِرَةِ اَلأتْقِياءُ.
برترینِ مردم در دنیا سخاوتمندانند، و در آخرت پرهیزگاران.
The best people in this world are the generous ones, and in the Hereafter, the God-wary.
أسْوَءُ النّاسِ حالاً مَنِ انْقَطَعَتْ مادَّتُهُ وبَقِيَتْ عادَتُهُ.
بدحال‌ترینِ مردم، کسی است که درآمدش قطع شده اما عادتِ خرج کردنش بر جای مانده باشد.
The person in the worst condition is one whose material wealth is cut off but his habit [of spending] remains.
أتْعَبُ النّاسِ قَلْباً مَنْ عَلَتْ هِمَّتُهُ وكَثُرَتْ مُرُوئَتـُهُ وَقَلَّتْ مَقْدُرَتـُهُ.
پُرغم‌ترینِ مردم از جهت دل، کسی است که همتش بلند، جوانمردی‌اش بسیار، اما توان و دسترسی‌اش اندک باشد.
The person who has the weariest heart is one whose endeavour is great and whose magnanimity is abundant, yet his [financial ability and] resources are minimal.
أضْيَقُ النّاسِ حالاً مَن كَثُرَتْ شَهْوَتُهُ وكَبُرَتْ هِمَّتُهُ وزادَتْ مَؤُنَتُهُ وَقَلَّتْ مَعُونَتُهُ.
تنگ‌روزگارترینِ مردم، کسی است که شهوتش بسیار، همتش بزرگ و مخارجش فزون باشد، ولی یاری‌دهنده‌اش اندک باشد.
The person living in the most straitened circumstances is one whose desire is much, whose endeavour is great and whose provisions are plenty but his support is less.
أفْضَلُ النّاسِ مَنْ عَصى هَواهُ وأفْضَلُ مِنْهُ مَنْ رَفَضَ دُنْياهُ.
برترینِ مردم، کسی است که با هوای نفسش مخالفت کند، و برتر از او کسی است که دنیایش را واگذارد.
The best person is one who resists his vain desires and better than him is he who rejects [the pleasures of] his worldly life.
أشْقَى النّاسِ مَنْ غَلَبَهُ هَواهُ فَمَلَكَتْهُ دُنْياهُ وأفْسَدَ أُخْراهُ.
تیره‌بخت‌ترینِ مردم، کسی است که هوای نفس بر او چیره شود تا دنیایش مالکِ او گردد و آخرتش را تباه سازد.
The most wretched person is one who is overcome by his vain desire so his worldly life gains mastery over him and he corrupts his Hereafter.
إنَّما النّاسُ عالِمٌ ومُتَعَلِّمٌ وَماسِواهُما فَهَمَجٌ.
مردم یا دانشمندند و یا دانش‌آموز، و جز این دو، خاشاک و عامه‌ای سرگردانند.
Verily people are only either scholars or seekers of knowledge, all others are rabble.
إنَّما سَراةُ النّاسِ أُولُوا الأحْلامِ الرَّغِيبَةِ والهِمَمِ الشَّريفَةِ وذَوُو النُّبْلِ.
بزرگان و برگزیدگانِ مردم، تنها خردمندانِ صاحب‌اندیشه، صاحبانِ همت‌های شریف و دارندگانِ اصالت و نجابت هستند.
Indeed the elite among the people are only those who have admirable intellects, honourable ambitions and are possessors of nobility.
لِيَكُنْ أحْظَي النّاسِ مِنْكَ أحْوَطُهُمْ عَلَى الضُّعَفاءِ، وأعْمَلُهُمْ بِالْحَقِّ.
باید بهره‌مندترینِ مردم نزد تو، پاسدارترینِ آنان نسبت به ضعیفان و عمل‌کننده‌ترینِ آنان به حق باشد.
Let the person who enjoys your favour the most be he who is most protective of the weak and acts most in accordance with the truth.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ إنْ أُغْضِبَ حَلُمَ وإنْ ظُلِمَ غَفَرَ وإنْ أُسِيءَ إلَيْهِ أحْسَنَ.
بهترینِ مردم کسی است که چون به خشم آید، بردباری ورزد؛ چون بر او ستم رود، ببخشاید؛ و چون به او بدی کنند، نیکی نماید.
The best person is he who shows forbearance if he is angered, forgives if he is oppressed, and does good [in return] if is wronged.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ نَفَعَ النَّاسَ.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که به مردم سود رساند.
The best person is one who benefits the people.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَن ْتَحَمَّلَ مَؤُنَةَ النّاسِ.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که بارِ هزینه و زحمتِ مردم را بر دوش کشد.
The best person is he who bears the responsibility of providing for the people.
خَيْـرُالنّاسِ أوْرَعُهُمْ وشَرُّهُمْ أفْجَرُهُمْ.
بهترینِ مردم، پارساترینِ آنان است؛ و بدترینشان، فاسق‌ترینِ آنان.
The best of people are the most pious amongst them and the worst of them are most immoral amongst them.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ إذا أُعْطِيَ شَكَرَ وَإذَا ابْتُلِيَ صَبَرَ وإذا ظُلِمَ غَفَرَ.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که هرگاه عطایش کنند شکر گزارد، هرگاه گرفتار شود شکیبایی ورزد، و هرگاه بر او ستم رود درگذرد.
The best person is one who shows gratitude when he is given, remains patient when he is tested [with tribulations], and forgives when he is wronged.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ أخْرَجَ الحِرْصَ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ، وعَصى هَواهُ في طاعَةِ رِبِّهِ.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که آزمندی را از دل بیرون کند و در راهِ اطاعتِ پروردگارش با هوای نفس مخالفت ورزد.
The best person is one who removes greed from his heart and resists his vain desires in obedience to his Lord.
خَيْـرُالنّاسِ مَنْ طَهَّرَ مِنَ الشَّهَواتِ نَفْسَهُ وقَمَعَ غَضَبَهُ وأرْضى رَبَّهُ.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که جانش را از شهوت‌ها پیراسته سازد، خشمش را فرو نشاند و پروردگارش را خشنود گرداند.
The best person is one who purifies his soul from lustful desires, quells his anger and pleases his Lord.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ كانَ في يُسْرِهِ سَخِيّاً شَكُوراً.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که در روزگارِ گشایش، بخشنده و سپاسگزار باشد.
The best person is one who is generous and thankful in times of prosperity.
خَيْـرُ النّاسِ مَنْ كانَ في عُسْرِهِ مُؤْثِراً صَبُوراً.
بهترینِ مردم، کسی است که در روزگارِ تنگی، اهلِ ایثار و شکیبایی باشد.
The best person is one who is altruistic and patient in times of hardship.
