لا فَقْرَ كَالجَهْلِ.
هیچ تهیدستی چون نادانی نیست.
There is no poverty like ignorance.
لايَزْكُو مََعَ الجَهْلِ مَذْهَبٌ.
با نادانی هیچ مسلکی نپرورد.
With ignorance, no path is purified.
لا فَقْرَ أشَدُّ مِنَ الجَهْلِ.
هیچ تهیدستی سخت‌تر از نادانی نیست.
There is no poverty more severe than ignorance.
لاسَوْأةَ أشْيَنُ مِنَ الجَهْلِ.
هیچ زشتی‌ای زشت‌تر از نادانی نیست.
There is no abomination more disgraceful than ignorance.
لامُصيبَةَ أشَدُّ مِنْ جَهْل.
هیچ مصیبتی سخت‌تر از نادانی نیست.
There is no adversity more severe than ignorance.
رَأسُ الجَهْلِ مُعاداةُ النّاسِ.
سرِ نادانی دشمنی با مردم است.
The cornerstone of ignorance is animosity towards people.
اَلجاهِلُ لَنْ يُلْقى أبَداً إلا مُفَرِّطاً، أو مُفْرِطاً.
نادان را هرگز جز کوتاهی‌کننده یا زیاده‌رو نیابند.
An ignorant person is never found to be anything but falling short or excessive.
اَلجاهِلُ لايَرْتَدِعُ، وبِالمَواعِظِ لا يَنْتَفِعُ.
نادان باز نایستد و از پندها بهره نگیرد.
Neither does an ignorant restrain himself [from wrongdoing] nor does he benefit from good advice.
اَلجاهِلُ مَنْ أطاعَ هَواهُ في مَعصيَةِ رَبِّهِ.
نادان آن است که هوای نفسش را در نافرمانیِ پروردگارش فرمان برد.
An ignorant person is one who obeys his vain desires in disobedience to his Lord.
اَلجاهِلُ يَسْتَوْحِشُ مِمّا يَأنَسُ بِه الحَكيْمُ.
نادان از آنچه حکیم بدان اُنس دارد، وحشت کند.
The ignorant person feels aversion towards that which the wise person feels at ease with.
اَلجاهِلُ لايَعْرِفُ العالِمَ لأنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ قَبْلُ عالِماً.
نادان دانشمند را نشناسد، چرا که خود پیش‌تر دانشمند نبوده است.
The ignorant person does not understand the learned because he [himself] was never learned before.
اَلجاهِلُ لا يَعْرِفُ تَقْصيرَهُ، وَلايَقْبَلُ مِنَ النَّصيحِ لهُ.
نادان کوتاهیِ خود را نداند و از خیرخواهش نپذیرد.
An ignorant person does not recognize his failure and does not accept the [good] advice given to him.
اَلجاهِلُ يَعْتَمِدُ عَلى أمَلِهِ، ويُقَصِّرُ في عَمَلِهِ.
نادان به آرزویش تکیه کند و در عملش کوتاه آید.
An ignorant person relies on his hopes and is negligent in his actions.
اَلجاهِلُ صَخْرَةٌ لا يَنْفَجِرُ ماؤُها، وَشَجَرَةٌ لايَخْضَرُّعُودُها، وأرضٌ لايَظهَرُ عُشْبُها.
نادان سنگی است که آبش نجوشد و درختی است که شاخش سبز نشود و زمینی است که گیاهش برنیاید.
The ignorant person is like a rock through which water does not gush forth, and a tree, the branches of which do not become green, and a ground upon which foliage is not found.
اَلْجاهِلُ مَيِّتٌ بَيْنَ الأحْياءِ.
نادان مرده‌ای است میان زندگان.
An ignorant person is [like the] dead among the living.
أشْقَى النّاسِ اَلجاهِلُ.
بدبخت‌ترینِ مردم نادان است.
The most wretched of all people is the ignorant one.
أجْهَلُ النّاسِ مُسِيئٌ مُسْتَأنِفٌ.
نادان‌ترینِ مردم بدکاری است که [گناه را] از نو آغاز کند.
An unremorseful sinner is the most ignorant person.
أجْهَلُ النّاسِ المُغْتَرُّ بِقَوْلِ مادِح مُتَمَلِّق، يُحَسِّنُ لَهُ القَبيحَ، ويُبَغِّضُ إلَيْهِ النَّصيْحَ.
نادان‌ترینِ مردم فریفتهٔ سخنِ ستایشگرِ تملّق‌گوست که زشت را برایش بیاراید و خیرخواه را به او دشمن دارد.
The most ignorant person is one who is deceived by the praise of a flatterer who makes the ugly look appealing to him and makes him hate the [sincere] adviser.
أبْغَضُ الخَلائِقِ إلَى اللّهِ تعالى، اَلجاهِلُ لأنَّهُ حَرَمَهُ ما مَنَّ بِهِ عَلى خَلْقِهِ، وهُوَ العَقْلُ.
مبغوض‌ترینِ آفریدگان نزد خدای تعالی نادان است؛ چرا که او را از آنچه بر آفریدگانش منت نهاده — یعنی خِرَد — محروم داشته است.
The most hated creature in the sight of Allah is the ignorant person, because He deprived him of what He bestowed on His creation, and that is intellect.
